Kevin James' Long Journey to the Silver Screen

Kevin James has established himself as a premier actor as of late, starring in popular films such as Paul Blart: Mall Cop and appearing in Grown Ups alongside a talented comedic cast of SNL alumni. It has been a long road to this point, however, as James' career had quite humble beginnings.

A native of Stony Brook, New York, James was a talented athlete early in his life and went to college to study sports management and play college football at the Division III level. After dropping out before graduation, James got his first taste of the world of acting by auditioning for a role in a comedy at a local theater.

After landing the part and shining, he never looked back. James joined his brother's improv group and this experience soon lead him to pursue stand-up comedy. After struggling initially, he went on to build a name for himself in the Long Island comedy scene by honing his act at a variety of local clubs. While he was getting started, James worked his days in a warehouse.

After a few years, he got a couple big breaks, as he appeared on Star Search and Tonight Show with Jay Leno. Around this time James became friends with Ray Romano, another comedian in the area. Since both were having considerable success in stand-up comedy, they both looked to enter the world of sitcom television.

At the time, James had a preliminary deal with NBC but it didn't materialize into anything, while Romano first broke through by landing a sitcom, Everybody Loves Raymond. After NBC passed on James' potential sitcom, The King of Queens, he got a deal with CBS in 1998. Both shows became popular and James and Romano even made guest appearances on each others' shows.

James next looked to break into the world of film, and he got his first real taste in 2004 in a small role in Adam Sandler's comedy 50 First Dates. His next role, however, would prove to be his most pivotal. He co-starred in Hitch with Will Smith, and the film greatly exceeded expectations and achieved major box-office success.

The King of Queens ended soon after and James made movie roles his primary focus. While today his popularity is skyrocketing, James is unlikely to forget his roots, and the hilarious, goofy personality he has cultivated in his stand-up will be here to stay.
