Nefertiti

Nefertiti reigned in Ancient Egypt between 1351 and 1331 B.C. She was the chief wife of the "heretic" Pharaoh Akhenaten. Akhenaten desperately wanted a male heir and Nefertiti tried hard to provide him with one. Instead, she presented him with six daughters. It was Queen Kiya, his lesser wife, Kiya, who provided him with male heirs - Smenkhkare and Tutankhamun, a fact which inflamed Nefertiti's jealousy and wrath.

Pharaoh Akhenaten loved both his wives, but it was Nefertiti to whom he exalted to a prominnent role in the religious and political life of Egypt. He bestowed upon her with such titles as Mistress of Happiness, Endowed with Favors, Chief Wife of the King, Beloved, Lady of the Two Lands, and May she live for Ever and Always".

She helped her husband initiate a massive religious and cultural revolution and represented the feminine aspect of the god, Aten. Renowned for her beauty, Nefertiti dressed to enhance her best features. She is often depicted wearing a close fitting sheath. As Akhenaten´s chief wife, she wore the crown of Hathor that resembled cow horns with plumes or the crown of Mut, the vulture goddess. But the crown she is most often associated with, is the blue war crown with its flat top.

Nefertiti vanished around year fourteen of Akhenaten´s reign. Rumours abound about her mysterious disappearance. Her name was struck from numerous inscriptions. Some say it was because she and her husband fell into discord and he banished her in disgrace to her palace, Aten's Castle. Others believe that she disguised herself as a man and assumed a new identity as Smenkhkare so that she could rule as co-regent with her husband. It is even speculated that she simply died from the plague and her death was so painful for Akhenaten that he did not wish to be reminded of her.

Whatever the circumstances, however, Nefertiti simply disappeared and there is no record of her death nor has her mummy or place of burial been confirmed. Her husband, Akhenaten died about several years later under circumstances just as mysterious. His mummy has not been found either.

Famed throughout the ancient world for her outstanding beauty, Akhenaten's queen Nefertiti remains the one of the most well known and mysterious queens of ancient Egypt.

Recession - Its Causes & Effects

It's been a lot of time we hear of "Recession" going on in US market. Everyone is talking about recession. We cling to newspapers, television news channels, and financial reports only to discover "what next" in recession. Technically, recession means decline in GDP or Gross Domestic Product of a country for two consecutive quarters. Now, this explains recession only as a definition to remember. When we go more deep, we need to first understand the meaning of GDP. Gross Domestic Product is the value of all final goods and services produced in an economy in a given year. These final goods are those goods which are not transformed into other goods. These goods are evaluated as per their market value. It means when the value of all final goods and services produced in a given year declines for two consecutive quarters, the state is referred to as "recession". It is visible in real GDP, real income, employment, industrial production, and wholesale-retail sales in an economy.

As per NBER (National Bureau of Economic Research), there have been ten recessions since 1945. From mid 1940s till 2007, the average recession lasted 10 months, while the average expansion lasted 57 months, giving us an average business cycle of 67 months or about 5 years and seven months. In this period, the shortest recession lasted only 6 months, from January to July 1980. The two longest recessions during this period lasted 16 months each, one extending from November 1973 to March 1975, and the other from July 1981 to November 1982. There was a noticeable decline in real GDP in both of these periods. The shortest expansion period from the mid-1940s until 2007 lasted only 24 months, from April 1958 to April 1960. The longest expansion continued from March 1991 to March 2001, setting a record of 120 consecutive months of growth. As luck would have it, United States has experienced only two relatively mild recessions and extended periods of expansion over the past 25 years.

There are various factors that flush an economy into the weird state of recession but Inflation is the main factor which contributes more towards the situation. Inflation is a condition of an economy when the prices of goods and services rise immensely over a period of time. The higher the rate of inflation, the smaller the percentage of goods and services that can be purchased with the same amount of money. This may be because of increased production costs, higher energy costs and national debt. When the prices of goods reach their ever higher stage, people tend to cut on overall spending, luxurious spending, restrict them towards basic necessities and thus save more n more. As a result, GDP declines when people begin to cut expenditures in order to cut down costs. This makes the companies to cut their costs as well and they chuck out workers which brings unemployment.

Thereby, following are some of the factors that push an economy into recession.....

• Credit crunch - shortage of finance
• Falling house prices - related to shortage of mortgages and credit crunch
• Cost push inflation squeezing incomes and reducing disposable income
• Collapse in confidence of finance sector causing lower confidence amongst 'real economy'

Recession brings with itself all major consequences which create mayhem within the economy. One of the major effects of recession is Inflation. Recession comes into effect with inflation while on the other hand; it is one of the after effects of recession. This means the commodities reach their ever highest prices and people generally cut down on costs. Hence, inflation becomes the major effect left out by recession. Lower income is another effect of recession in the economy. As people cut down on costs, they tend to buy less which reduces the income and thereby fewer profits or no profits. The next consequence is the increment in mortgage rates. Lenders increase the mortgage rates in a bid to cover the losses they bear during that time. Employment opportunities are also one of the main targets when the economy is burning under recession. In order to cut down on costs, companies cut down on employment opportunities thereby leading with unemployment in the economy. So when an economy enters into recession, firms experience a decline in profitability. This is because:

1. Tendency for price wars to develop in a recession. Low sales encourage firms to cut prices
2. Falling sales will lead to lower revenues.

Understanding Economic Cycles

Definition from Wikipedia.org.:The business cycle or economic cycle refers to the fluctuations of economic activity about its long term growth trend. The cycle involves shifts over time between periods of relatively rapid growth of output (recovery and prosperity), and periods of relative stagnation or decline (contraction or recession). These fluctuations are often measured using the real gross domestic product. Despite being named cycles, these fluctuations in economic growth and decline do not follow a purely mechanical or predictable periodic pattern.

The economic clock is a simplified approach to understanding our position as to the health of the ecomony. It also assists to identify the best performing market sectors in elation to the growth area of the economic cycle. Keep in mind that the there any number of random influences that effect the economy such as wars, natural disasters and the like that sway the cycle and effect the transistion. It wiil never be a perfect cycle and should only be used as guide to assist with investment decisions.

The above example is very simplified version of economic expansion and contraction. The Economic Cycle Research Institute or ECRI earn a living from analysing the economy and providing detailed information on the health of the economy by way of specialized indicators from various economic sources. These indicators are complied and the result is some of the best leading index indicators for picking turning points in the economy. One indicator we follow is the Weekly Leading Index or WLI.

 

The Business cycles in six stages, where:

• Stage 1 - Only Bonds are bullish;
• Stage 2 - Only Commodities are bearish;
• Stage 3 - Everything is bullish;
• Stage 4 - Bonds begin a bear market but Stocks and Commodities remain bullish;
• Stage 5 - Only Commodities are bullish; and,
• Stage 6 - Nothing is Bullish

Martin is a well respected market analyst and commentator and in his book he clearly describes the intermarket relationships between the major markets and how they are intrinsically tied with each other. The flow on effects of each cycle then affects the corresponding business sectors expanding or contracting business in each of these sectors.

Alicia Silverstone's vegan lifestyle has brought her the glowing model looks which so many crave. She has been vegan for 10 years and in that time has lost the weight she wanted to lose, her nails are stronger and her skin is glowing. Surely this is a true model lifestyle to follow.

The Jewish community has been keen to promote Alicia Silverstone's vegan lifestyle. Her father, Monty, is an English-born Jew whose ancestors came from Eastern Europe whilst her mother, Didi is from Scotland and converted to Judaism before Alicia was born.

Alicia Turned Vegan at 21. She became a household name aged 18 with her film "Clueless" though she made this film before she turned vegan. She followed this up as Batgirl in a remake of Batman and Robin, which was a box office flop and she was criticised for putting on weight.

At 21, after the Batman and Robin criticism, she made the decision to go fully vegan. She didn't know for sure how or if her health would be altered. She didn't know if she'd maintain a balanced diet or eat a good meal again.

After a couple of weeks she noticed her chronic acne had disappeared, her face glowed and her body had slimmed down. She no longer got allergy shots, stopped her asthma medication and any antibiotic. She had detoxed her body, ridding herself of the things that caused her skin and weight problems.

Her weight loss didn't come from going on a diet. Instead it was as a result of cutting out the bad fats and proteins commonly found in meat and dairy products & replacing it with healthy fruit and vegetables.

Alicia has been a strong advocate of the raw lifestyle. This is a variation on veganism where food is not heated above 118 degrees, since cooking above this temperature kills the goodness and nutrients found in fruit and vegetables.

Ronald Reagan - A Brief Biography

Love him or hate him, Ronald Reagan is one of the greatest political figures of the 20th century. The Ronald Reagan Presidency (as 40th President of the United States) began in 1981 and ended in 1989. Reagan served two terms and the legacy of his tenure is stored in the Ronald Reagan library.

Roanld Reagan was born in Tampico, Illinois on February 6, 1911 to John Edward "Jack" Reagan and Nelle Wilson Reagan. He had one brother - Neil "Moon" Reagan.

He moved around quite a bit as a child, eventually moving to Dixon where he attended Dixon High School and became interested in sports, acting and storytelling. He also had his first job at River Rock as a lifeguard. In 1926, he saved a remarkable 77 people.

At Eureka College, he got his first taste of public life when he became a Chicago Cubs announcer for WHO in Des Moines, IA. This announcer job eventually brought him to Hollywood to announe a Cubs game there. While in Hollywood, he went to a screen test which led to a job with Warner Brothers for $200 a week.

During his time in Hollywood, he appeared in over 50 major films. He was also elected President of the Screen Actors Guild in 1947 where he served for a total of five terms. He left the office in July 1960. Prior to his election to the SAG, he served in the Army during World War II.

Politically, Reagan's interest began as a member of the "Democrats for Eisenhower." But over time his political affiliation shifted and in 1962, he became a member of the Republican party. He ran for Governor of California in the 1966 election and scored an easy victory over his opponent Edmund Brown.

Reagan ran for President in 1980 and became the 40th President where he accomplished many great victories - like the genesis of the collapse of the USSR and the tearing down of the Berlin wall. He also appointed the first female Supreme Court Justice in 1981. He also presided over one of America's greatest modern tragedies - the explosion of the Space Shuttle Challenger.

Reagan was known as the great communicator as exmplefied in many of his speeches. From the teary eyed speech he delivered after the shuttle disaster to the powerful speech aimed at USSR with the famous phrase "Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!", he was a master of the delivery. In fact, his video speech library is one of the greatest gifts he left to modern politicians who wish to study a master communicator.

More Checking Account Fees on the Way

Hold on to your wallet, you are about to pay more for your checking accounts. Thanks to new regulations by Congress, banks will be limited to how much overdraft fees they can collect from customers. To offset the lost revenue, several big banks (Wells Fargo, Bank of America, et el.) recently announced that they will begin charging customers monthly fees for their checking accounts. While I'm not surprised the banks swapped one fee for another, I find it more surprising many Americans still bank at these large institutions despite their exorbitant fees when there are so many cheaper and better alternatives available.

Wells Fargo charges customers $5 per month unless they maintain an average daily balance of $1,500 while Bank of America charges $8.95 for the same minimum balance requirement. That means that if your account falls below $1,500 on any given day in the month, your account is slapped with a monthly fee. While there are countless other fees, including an additional $5 a month to view your deposits online for business checking accounts at Wells Fargo and $3 per month to view check imagines online at Bank of America, the one that's really over the top is a $10 fee for incoming wires at Wells Fargo. That's the same as charging you for making a deposit.

Luckily, there are many alternatives to banking with the national giants. The internet's omnipresence at work, home, or on our mobile devises has made internet banking simple. Even the smallest community banks and credit unions have a sophisticated web presence. Community banks, credit unions, and web-based banks are an excellent option for even the savviest consumer. For example, many of these entities offer truly free checking (including business checking), unlimited ATM fee reimbursements, free checks, and I have yet to find one that charges for an incoming wire.

Chances are unless you're living under a rock, you've heard the name Tiger Woods a time or two. As the most famous golfer in the world, Tiger Woods is one of the most recognizable names today. Eldrick "Tiger" Woods was born December 30, 1975 in Cypress California. He is the only child of Earl and Kultida Woods. Tiger Woods began playing golf when we was only two years old. He appeared on television and was featured in magazines as a toddler and school aged child because of his unbelievable golf skills. At the age of eight, he won the 9-10 boys event at the Junior World Golf Championships. He won the Junior World Championships six times including four consecutive wins! He became the youngest U.S. Junior Amateur Champion when he was 15.

Tiger Woods attended college at Stanford University for two years before turning pro in August of 1996. He signed deal of $40 million with Nike and $20 million with Titleist right away. In April 1997, Tiger won his first golf major, The Masters, by a record of 12 strokes and became the youngest Masters winner ever. He also won three other PGA tour events that year and on June 15, 1997, he became number one in the Official World Golf Rankings.

To date, Tiger Woods has taken first place titles at three Masters, two U.S. Open's, and three PGA Championships. He has won such awards as Rookie of the Year, Athlete of the Year and PGA Tour Player of the Year, some of these awards up to eight times. In October 5, 2004, Tiger married Elin Nordegren. They are expecting their first child in the Summer of 2007.

Gwen Stefani - LA's Little L-A-M-B

When Eric Stefani asked his then 17 year old sister Gwen to sing with his band No Doubt, a calypso/jazz/blues band, he couldn't have known he was watching history in the making. Watching as his little sister began what would for her become a launching pad to pop diva fame. For eight years, she was the lead singer for the band. Although she began a solo career in 2004, her association with No Doubt lasts to this day. Collaborating with artists like Linda Perry, The Neptunes and others, she styled her first album - L.A.M.B. after the '80s and 90's music she listened to in school. (L.A.M.B. is also the name of her fashion line).

Her albums include 2007's Sweet Escape and Love.Angel.Music.Baby.(L.A.M.B.), 2005's Maximum Gwen Stefani as well as re-releases of those albums in different formats.

Born to Patti and Dennis Stefani in Fullerton, California she was raised in Anaheim where she attended Loara High School and where she first performed onstage singing "I Have Confidence" from The Sound of Music. Oddly, she was discouraged from taking music lessons to train her voice. Her "loopy and unpredictable" style would eventually give her the unique and personal sound that has helped define her music.

Named after a flight attendant in the 1968 novel Airport, the name Gwen is Welsh and means "blessed". And if you asked her she'd probably agree. Besides her rising stardom and success in the fashion world, in May of 2006, she gave birth to Kingston James McGregor Rossdale at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. She is married to Bush guitarist and lead singer Gavin Rossdale. Now that little Kingston is a litte over a year, Gwen says she can't wait to get pregnant again, but not while on tour.

Many of the women in Gwen's family are seamstresses so it's little surprise that we find she's also a talented fashion designer. Both she and her mother Patti, made much of Gwen's clothes when she was young. During her onstage debut back at Loara High, she wore a tweed dress she'd made herself taking inspiration from a dress worn in The Sound of Music. Her bold, sometimes brazen style of music is reflected in her designs, with realistic depictions and bold patterns, a technique called trompe l'oeil, French for "trick the eye".

L.A.M.B., which stands for Love, Angel, Music, Baby, is a fashion line created by Stefani and incudes elegant, flowing eveningwear and pants, tee shirts, jackets, and boots made with fabric and materials found in locations around the world including South America, Asia, and India. This 3-dimensional, vivid artwork is something you'd find Gwen wearing around the house chasing after little Kingston or in a mural on the side of a building in France.

Hers is a restless spirit though and her thirst for adventure not being satisfied with pop divadom and fashion design, Gwen tried her hand at acting. She auditioned for and got the role of Jean Harlow in Martin Scorsese's 2004 film The Aviator. Scorsese was struck by Stefani's resemblance to Harlow. It was the perfect role for the sassy, Platinum Blonde (since 9th grade) but she was extremely nervous. She tried to convince herself "It's only a small part..." (she couldn't even find it in the script). Says Gwen "Acting is a lot different than singing. It's not as theatrical, it's a lot more subtle, and that's a lot harder..." She got acting tips from the film's star, Leonardo DiCaprio, also a blonde since 9th grade (unconfirmed). She has numerous other film and television credits including Zoolander, where she played herself(Does that count?), and many movie soundtracks.

She may have started out playing little clubs in her big brother's band but Gwen Stefani has re-invented herself a number of times and with each transformation, a bright, shiny new butterfly emerges ready to fly and take on new challenges. A strong and independant spirit, she's not afraid to take the plunge, has an apparent distaste for convention and oh yea, she thinks being pregnant is romantic. More power to you, Miss Gwen!

How Sad - The Madoff Story

One of Bernie Madoff's sons, Mark Madoff, apparently hanged himself in his apartment, on the second anniversary of his father's arrest on numerous charges for the ponzi scheme that bankrupted thousands of Americans.

Mark and Andrew turned their father in after he confessed his crimes to them on December 10, 2008. Can you even imagine how hard that had to have been for them? Personally, I think it speaks to their innocence, though both have been buried under accusations, with Andrew and his mother highlighted the most for investigation. Mark and Andrew literally grew up in their father's office. They knew no other business, but that of their father, and I have to believe that they knew what their father wanted them to know and not anything more, just like the investors who were bilked.

They were used to a life of privilege and reveled in their father's success. Who wouldn't? And which of you would be looking at your father to figure out if he was guilty of crimes that you were not aware of? Take, for example, serial killers and child molesters. How many of their family members are aware of what they are doing? Are they ever investigated for the crimes of their fathers?

Andrew Madoff is obviously a survivor, but how long can he continue to go on? He has a father serving 150 years in jail and is estranged from both of his parents. And now he has lost a brother. He has thousands of law suits against him and still faces years of litigation and public scrutiny. He is a man about to be married and I have to wonder how the couple's engagement has survived so far. I wish the both of them the best and my heart goes out to Andrew.

Granted, I did not lose a fortune with this man. I don't have a fortune to lose. But, if I had been, I'd like to think that I would not punish innocent people for my mistaken loyalty to a crook. I would hope that I can admit that I screwed up and that it was no one's fault but my own...and Bernie Madoff's. And that justice was done as he spends the rest of his life in prison. I feel no sympathy for him; he brought this on himself. But, I feel that making the lives of his children, his grandchildren, and probably their children miserable is almost as much a crime as what Bernie did to begin with.

There has to be an end to it somewhere, but unfortunately our legal system does not draw a line between justice and harassment. Where will it end?

This workout should be done 4 times per week. Complete entire circuits and repeat.

Squats with Dumbbells - 12 reps
Decline Press Ups (feet on a Swiss Ball) - 10 reps
Jump Squats - 30 seconds
Rest - 30 seconds
Walking Lunges with Dumbbells -12 reps each leg
Alternating Dumbbell Chest Press on Swiss ball - 10 reps each arm
Jump Rope - 30 seconds
Rest - 30 seconds
Reverse Lunges - 12 reps each leg
Pull-Ups - 10 reps
Jump Squats - 30 seconds
Rest - 30 seconds
Dumbbell Stiff Leg Dead Lifts - 12 reps
Swiss Ball Roll Out - 10 reps
Jump Rope - 30 seconds
Rest - 30 seconds

I would then include 15 minutes of High Intensity Interval Training 3 times per week done after 3 of the above workouts, which would consist of:

Hill or Flat Sprinting - 30 seconds
Slow walk down the hill or back to start - 60 seconds
Repeat this 10 times

On the other 3 days I would include hiking, swimming and perhaps cycling. Whatever exercise you enjoy that will keep you active.

With any workout plan your nutrition is just as important. Include 5 small meals each day. Breakfast, mid morning snack, lunch, mid afternoon snack and dinner.

Eat protein with each meal, so for example eggs, chicken breasts, lean meat, fish, nuts and pulses. Include carbohydrates with your protein. So lots of fresh fruit and vegetables, staying away from heavy carbohydrates (brown rice, brown pasta) in the evenings and focusing on vegetables with your chicken, fish or lean meat.

Always stay away from processed foods and only eat healthy, natural and nutritious foods.
Eating well and following the workouts that I have mentioned will have you looking hot and sexy for your summer vacation. You may not get Cameron's body but you'll be proud to show off the one you've got.

Kevin James' Long Journey to the Silver Screen

Kevin James has established himself as a premier actor as of late, starring in popular films such as Paul Blart: Mall Cop and appearing in Grown Ups alongside a talented comedic cast of SNL alumni. It has been a long road to this point, however, as James' career had quite humble beginnings.

A native of Stony Brook, New York, James was a talented athlete early in his life and went to college to study sports management and play college football at the Division III level. After dropping out before graduation, James got his first taste of the world of acting by auditioning for a role in a comedy at a local theater.

After landing the part and shining, he never looked back. James joined his brother's improv group and this experience soon lead him to pursue stand-up comedy. After struggling initially, he went on to build a name for himself in the Long Island comedy scene by honing his act at a variety of local clubs. While he was getting started, James worked his days in a warehouse.

After a few years, he got a couple big breaks, as he appeared on Star Search and Tonight Show with Jay Leno. Around this time James became friends with Ray Romano, another comedian in the area. Since both were having considerable success in stand-up comedy, they both looked to enter the world of sitcom television.

At the time, James had a preliminary deal with NBC but it didn't materialize into anything, while Romano first broke through by landing a sitcom, Everybody Loves Raymond. After NBC passed on James' potential sitcom, The King of Queens, he got a deal with CBS in 1998. Both shows became popular and James and Romano even made guest appearances on each others' shows.

James next looked to break into the world of film, and he got his first real taste in 2004 in a small role in Adam Sandler's comedy 50 First Dates. His next role, however, would prove to be his most pivotal. He co-starred in Hitch with Will Smith, and the film greatly exceeded expectations and achieved major box-office success.

The King of Queens ended soon after and James made movie roles his primary focus. While today his popularity is skyrocketing, James is unlikely to forget his roots, and the hilarious, goofy personality he has cultivated in his stand-up will be here to stay.

Don't Go Crazy On Your Abs - A big mistake many gym rats make is to work their abs way too hard or too much. Your abs are a small muscle group compared to your legs, chest and back. Work them appropriate to their overall group size. If you do a balanced workout, you will have a balanced physique.

Elena Kagan - Judicial Experience Not a Prerequisite

As the first female Dean of the Harvard Law School and the first woman to serve as U.S. Solicitor General, Elena Kagan has a track record of setting precedents. If confirmed, Ms. Kagan will become the youngest justice on the court, the third woman, and the third Jewish justice. Her confirmation would mark the first time in U.S. history that there would not be a Protestant on the high court. There are now six Catholics sitting on the court.

Opposition to Ms. Kagan has not as of yet focused on any of the demographic factors, nor on her sexual orientation, but instead on her lack of judicial experience. Her lack of judicial experience is a quite specious argument as two of the last four Chief Justices of the Supreme Court had no judicial experience either. Both Earl Warren (Chief Justice from October 5, 1953-June 23, 1969) and William Rehnquist (Chief Justice from September 26, 1986-September 3, 2005) had never served as judges prior to being appointed to the Supreme Court. Both Warren and Rehnquist shared, with Kagan, a political background. Warren was elected three times as Governor of California, and served as Attorney General of California. Rehnquist was for years active in Arizona Republican Party politics and served in President Nixon's Justice Department working for Attorney General John Mitchell.

The lack of a judicial record and "paper trail" will present Republican opponents to Ms. Kagan with a limited set of writings to scrutinize and question her about. It should not, however, limit their questions for the nominee. As President Obama correctly noted at the time of the Harriet Miers nomination by President Bush, "...we have yet to know her views on many of the critical constitutional issues facing our country today. In the coming weeks, we'll need as much information and forthright testimony... so that the U.S. Senate can make an educated and informed decision on her nomination to the Supreme Court."

Liberal Senators will also want to question Ms. Kagan carefully. As Solicitor General, Kagan argued before the Supreme Court in favor of expanding battlefield law, including providing for indefinite detention without a trial, outside of traditional battlefields. In the end, it will be up to the Republicans in the U.S. Senate to decide how vigorously to oppose the Kagan nomination. She would be replacing retiring justice John Paul Stevens - often thought to be the most liberal member of the current court - so a Kagan confirmation is unlikely to change the ideological make-up of the next court.
